Nanaimo (BC): The first annual Paddle FUN Fest took place in Departure Bay May 16 & 17, 2015 and nearly 100 paddlers took part in 45 clinics throughout the weekend. The highlight of the weekend was an over 36 vessel Flotilla which paddled from Jesse Island and was welcomed into Departure Bay by Snuneymuxw Councillor Mike Wyse.
The event was open to those age 6 and up; with all invited to try stand up paddle boarding (SUP), outrigger canoes, kayaking and dragon boating with the public and all paddlers welcome throughout the event.
Land events included clinics and presentations as well as booths from local vendors such as Alberni Outpost and Valhalla Pure with food catered by Two Chef’s Affair of Nanaimo. RCM Search and Rescue (RCMSAR27) provided support during water-based activities and races including the ‘Shack-Attack’ where paddlers raced 10 km from Departure Bay to Shack Island (return) in a variety of vessels, with the winning time of less than an hour.
The group also participated in a “Ready, Set, Wear It!” aka Life Jacket World Record Day to promote safe boating. In 2014, more than 6,973 participants took part in 175 events around the world. This was Nanaimo's first entry. The 2015 record will be verified later this month.
Paddle FUN Fest was created by the Nanaimo Boathouse Society collaborating with the paddling groups NCKC, Nanaimo Paddlers, BC Marine Trails and VIU.
Dates for Paddle FUN Fest 2016 will be announced in the coming weeks.
